The headwaters of some of the state’s most important and storied
rivers – the Wisconsin, Wolf, Flambeau, St. Croix, Chippewa and three
state-designated Wild Rivers – are “up North.” The region’s watery
wildness and relatively undeveloped state draws hundreds of thousands
of vacationers and people buying a lakeshore or a river bank to build
on.
This trend sets up conflicts between preservationists and
developers, lifetime residents and recent arrivals, “less government”
advocates and those who fear that development will destroy the beauty
and access to water that fuels economic activity in an otherwise
economically challenged area.
These divergent value systems mean that water issues are contentious
and divisive. Now is the time to work proactively to ensure that we
leave these precious waters healthy for those who come next.
